Floral Gardens

The garden has always meant more than one thing to me. It is my escape. When I paint for hour after hour, the world goes quiet and I am just there, with the petals. My favorite time to paint is 4 a.m. The house is silent. My world is silent. The daylight is just beginning to break and the canvas is waiting. That is when the garden speaks loudest. I look at each blossom individually, closely. The shape of one petal leaning into the next. How they touch, how they curl, how they hold each other up. That interaction — that is where the magic is. If you get close enough, you can feel it. The colors are never the same. Never. From 4 a.m. to noon to dusk to moonlight, the same peony changes completely. The sun moves, the moon moves, and the garden reinvents itself. That is why I paint them so large — so you have to come close and see that change happening. And the nurturing — tending a garden reminds me of raising my three grown children. You water, you wait, you worry, you watch. You can't rush a peony. You can't rush a child. You just love them and give them light and let them become what they were meant to be.

The Duet — 30 x 48 — is a celebration of partnership in full bloom. Two luminous dahlias rise together in a vertical harmony, their layered petals rendered in soft washes of blush, lilac, pale butter yellow, and pearl white against a quiet, misty blue-gray ground. The upper bloom opens with cool, airy grace while the lower answers in warmer pinks, creating a gentle call-and-response that gives the painting its title. Delicate scabiosa sprigs and fresh green foliage frame the pair, and a small, half-open bud at the edge hints at what's still to come. Painted with loose, expressive realism and an emphasis on light, the piece feels both grand in scale and intimate in mood — a duet of color, form, and companionship.

Morning Hush — 36 x 36 acrylic — captures that quiet, suspended moment just after dawn when the world is still soft and full of promise. The palette is slightly deeper and more theatrical, with warm browns and soft creams behind the blooms, emphasizing contrast and continuity. Together, I and II read as partners — light and shadow, front and back, opening and closing — a waltz of growth, bloom, and return.

Vine Chorus — 20 x 16 — is a joyful, sunlit tangle of Black-Eyed Susan vine (Thunbergia alata) singing in full color.
